Supporting Senior Leadership Teams

Organisations
  • Are all your staff and pupils achieving their full potential?

  • What could they achieve if you were able to increase their engagement?

  • What effect would that have on pupil outcomes and overall school performance?

Knowing what motivates staff and students is critical to the success of schools and colleges – everyone achieves more if they are both motivated and engaged.  Motivation is the “key to persistence and to learning that lasts. The challenge is to help each person clarify his or her important purposes and then to find, or create, the combination of educational experiences that lead to those desired outcomes” (Chickering and Kuh, 2005, p. 1).

We use our knowledge of motivation to support schools and colleges in a number of ways to:

  • Improve pupil engagement
  • Understand how to reach disengaged pupils
  • Enable pupils, their parents/guardians and teachers to understand what they need to maintain or increase their motivation
  • Support CEIAG and PHSE teaching by increasing self awareness
  • Support SEND pupils. (I understand the many challenges faced by people with disabilities, as I’ve always lived with a disability. This has never stopped me doing anything I’ve wanted and been motivated to do and achieve!)
  • Provide a low cost tool to measure pupil and staff wellbeing
  • Help you to recruit, manage and retain engaged and motivated staff

Until now, it has been very difficult to measure motivation and to know what motivates individuals.  We use an ISO accredited, simple, easy and affordable tool to called a Motivational Map®that generates reports that not only identify what motivates an individual but more importantly provide simple strategies we can use to maintain and improve their engagement. The insight provided through Motivational Maps® can support schools and colleges with leadership and management, teaching, learning and assessment and students with their personal development and career guidance.

Motivational Maps provide real direction for staff and students. They provide:

  • Insight to leaders and governors about the organisation’s effectiveness
  • A way for leaders to monitor the progress of learners and ensure that they are engaged and motivated
  • Insightful CPD self-assessment reports which enable staff to reflect on the way that they teach
  • Reports to enable leaders to identify and develop leadership capacity and succession planning
  • Support for performance management processes
  • Ways to evaluate the curriculum and its impact on learners’ outcomes
  • Clear measurements of the level of motivation and engagement of teaching staff and students
  • Increased engagement, particularly for SEND, disadvantaged and disengaged students
  • Support for personal development, behaviour and welfare and valuable insight to support careers guidance
  • Strategies to engage employers and or parents/carers

The insight and information gained from using Motivational Maps support Senior Leadership Teams with meeting Ofsted requirements.

We design and deliver bespoke mapping projects to support senior leadership teams, departments, classes or individual teachers and students.

Recruiting, Managing and Retaining motivated and engaged staff

We all know that as many teachers are leaving the profession as joining at the moment.  We are at a crisis point.

We also know that teachers, along with all other staff, don't start a new role unmotivated.  So what can you do to support all your staff?

We run projects, to support staff engagement and wellbeing.  We use the Motivational Map® tool to support our work.  Our projects are individually designed so we address issues pertinent to your school or team.  We spend time developing an understanding of what the key issues to be addressed are, then work with you to deliver the appropriate combination of workshops, coaching or training for the team.

Supporting Staff Wellbeing And Engagement

When you think about it, it’s not your skills, experience, talents, or even your personality that get you out of bed in the morning – it’s your motivation.

Knowing what motivates you as a teacher enables you to seek the right roles and responsibilities at work and gain the most satisfaction from what you do.

We all know that supporting teachers wellbeing and engagement is key to supporting them in their roles.  Our Understanding Motivation workshops enable them to develop their understanding of themselves and their team members so they can all work to support themselves and their colleagues.

Teachers make a difference for their pupils every day.  We make a difference for teachers.  We support teachers personal development, providing workshops, INSET days and 1-1 and group coaching.

Understanding we are all motivated by different things and how this can impact on people’s ways of working can help teams to be more supportive, resolve conflict within teams, reducing stress points and increasing individual’s health and wellbeing.

For teachers’, understanding what motivates you, your colleagues and your students, enables you to work more effectively to implement practical, simple solutions to increase students’ motivation and engagement, enabling them to make progress and achieve their goals.  Our 1 1/2 hour Motivational Map® feedback sessions enable you to understand what you need from work to realise your full potential.

"Thank you very much for your insight and kindness.  Thank you for helping me understand the dynamics of the situation and personalities at work.  I look forward to the new term with more confidence.  I feel I know what to pursue for personal satisfaction and with patience and kindness towards myself (no more beating myself up!).  Using the knowledge I have gained, I will explore options, make time for social interaction and accept what motivates me is not the same as what motivates others!  I am now on a fresh journey to workplace happiness."

Supporting And Motivating Learners

Motivational Maps® give us insight into not only how we manage and react to change but our preferred language and learning styles too. Understanding what motivates someone enables you to plan teaching, project work and home study to maximise an individual’s engagement. Knowing if the learner prefers detailed instructions and time for thought (the Defender Motivator), working with others (Friend Motivator) or working on their own and managing how they complete the project (Spirit Motivator), enables you to work with them to achieve their goals.

We provide feedback sessions to explain the report results and develop your understanding of the different motivators. We work with you to develop strategies that can easily be put in place that will not only improve the young person’s motivation but also improve your relationship with them. You will understand how the young person prefers to learn and be communicated with, and, importantly, how they will respond to change.

Motivational Scores

The insight gained from understanding their motivators helps young people when applying for jobs. In addition to understanding the type of work that will motivate them, they can also consider which type of organisations would support them to be motivated. The understanding and knowledge they gain helps them with job applications, and interviews, enabling them not only to provide information about how they work but also how the organisation can manage them to get the best out of them.

CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice And Guidance)

At various stages of their progress towards becoming an adult, young people are faced with difficult and often confusing options;

  • what subjects to pursue towards examinations;
  • whether to leave school or college and seek employment or to remain in further and higher education;
  • what courses and qualifications to undertake;
  • what career options would be best suited to them.

All too often, decisions around these important milestones are focussed on tangible and measurable factors such as assessment marks or predicted grades. Unfortunately, the intangibles of the young person’s suitability for a particular career choice or their personal drivers and aspirations are much harder to measure and are, therefore, often not considered. What actually motivates and excites people is all too often ignored.

How we Work

We use the brilliant Motivational Maps® Youth tool.  We work with classes or individuals to identify what motivates them and understand what makes them tick. We develop their understanding of their motivators and discuss simple, easy to implement strategies, to support them through their final studies and the support them with their decision making.

For example, although a young person with excellent grades in science may have decided to become a medical doctor, Motivational Maps will identify that they may be drawn towards working as part of a team (in which case Anaesthetics may be a good option), or desire to work in a people-centred environment (where becoming a GP might be suitable), or be happiest when working alone (when specialising in Radiography could be appropriate). All three of these alternatives require a medical degree, but each specialty has very different working practices.

The insight gained from understanding their motivators helps young people when applying for jobs. In addition to understanding the type of work that will motivate them, we teach them the importance of consider not only the role but also the type of organisation and environment they would enjoy working in. The understanding and knowledge they gain helps them with understanding others as well as supporting them with job applications, and interviews, enabling them to provide information about how they work and ask questions about the organisation’s culture so they can find roles that are right for them.
