What Motivates You?

Pictures of the 9 motivators

Motivation lies at the heart of every decision we make and every success we achieve. We are all unique: it’s not our personality or knowledge and skills that drives us, it’s our motivation.

Unlike our personality, motivation is not fixed. It’s dynamic. It changes to adapt to the situation we are in and the challenges we face. We know when we feel motivated to do something, it’s wonderful, it energises us and drives us on to be the best we can be. But we also know when we don’t feel motivated. When our motivation levels are running low it’s hard to do anything. It’s hard to get out of bed. By understanding what naturally motivates us we can begin to understand what makes us do the things we do and say the things we say. We can identify what ‘makes us tick’. We can find direction and we can find success.

Whatever age you are, whether you are at school, college, work, going through major life changes or heading for retirement, understanding what motivates you enables you, and those supporting you to identify what is important to you.

There are 9 things that drive us - Look below to see what they are. Think about which of these motivational drivers you relate to most strongly. (It is likely that the images that draw you will be the motivators you relate to.)

There are two different types of motivation - intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.  If we know what we need for our intrinsic motivation we can then use the right extrinsic motivators.

Look at these 9 things that motivate us – think about which of these intrinsic motivational drivers you relate to most strongly.  (It is likely that the images that draw you will be for the intrinsic motivators you relate to.)
